Demystifying Act 2: Where GREAT Scripts Go To Thrive

Every story is a journey, every script a voyage.

With a departure in the First Act and a destination in the Final Act, that leaves Act 2 to be the actual JOURNEY in your journey.

Most of us come up with great ideas. Usually, it has a killer opening and a great ending, it’s all part of the concept and promise. When pitching we often reduce our ideas to that opening hook and the killer conclusion, forgetting that what elevates a great idea, into a truly world class screenplay is THE JOURNEY. The characters. How they interact. How the story is driven forward relentlessly and with momentum.

In essence, this is where the audience needs to continually ask (and excitedly)… ‘What TF is going to happen next?’

Maintaining this momentum and mystery, while exploring character arcs and themes, building plot, tensions and careening toward that satisfying conclusion is the heavy lifting of screenwriting. Make no mistake, this is where the hardest and greatest writing will need to take place.

Getting through the middle part of your script is notoriously challenging. “Act 2 is where good scripts go to die,” it is often said.

But buried within the challenge of the 2nd Act is a series of opportunities to enlighten, exposit, and entertain in unique and amazing ways… and again, to elevate your screenplay in the eyes of readers and producers.

We will demystify the elusive Act 2, giving you the tools to unlock its secrets and deliver on the promise of your great ideas.

Remember, execustion ALWAYS trumps ideas. Even the greatest ideas.
